Official Release

Beacon Hill Athletic Clubs and Combat Sports Int’l to open new Mixed Martial Arts training facility

BOSTON– December 7, 2009 —The Beacon Hill Athletic Clubs (BHAC) announced today a unique partnership with Combat Sports International, the Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) equipment industry leader, to create the first multi-use, state of the art facility in New England to serve both professional fighters and recreational newcomers.

The facility will be located at the BHAC North Station gym and will include an MMA ring and octagon cage, and a full complement of bags, mats and training gear.  Some of the area’s best MMA technicians have joined BHAC to serve as trainers at this facility, teaching a full range of classes for the novice all the way to the highly experienced. The Combat Sports International Training Center will provide instruction at all levels from the professional athlete to the soccer mom.  Kids programs will be available as well, teaching discipline and self-respect in a fun and social atmosphere that fosters health of mind, body and spirit.

The BHAC and Combat Sports International partnership comes at a favorable time, following Governor Deval Patrick’s bill on November 30, 2009 to make Massachusetts the 42nd state to regulate MMA fighting.  Fighters from across the Globe including those that train at the new Combat Sports International facility will now be allowed to fight in Boston.  Scheduled dates are planned for summer, 2010.

The much sought after instructors on staff include a veritable who’s-who of the MMA world:

Phil Myers – With over 10 years of mixed martial arts experience, Phil Myers has dedicated his life to the practice and teaching of Brazilian jiu-jitsu.  Phil is a Gracie Barra black belt under Roberto Maia and has taught at both Gracie Barra Boston and Gracie Barra New Hampshire.  Phil has complimented his jiu-jitsu skills with extensive judo training, and competes actively at the local, national and international levels.

John McDonough – John has more than 20 years of experience in the martial arts. He has trained extensively in MMA, Muay Thai, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, catch wrestling, boxing & karate.  Before joining the Combat Sports International training staff John taught MMA, Muay thai & grappling at Sityodtong Boston, Integrated Fighting under Jason Godsey and New England Submission Fighting under Kirik Jenness.  John is also an experienced corner man and fighter manager.

Sean Matthews – Sean has practiced Muay Thai for over a decade.  He has trained under Master Toddy in Las Vegas, Kru Toy at Sityodtong Thailand and at Sityodtong Boston.  Sean has taught all levels of Muay Thai and MMA at Sityodtong Boston and is an experienced cornerman and cutman.  In addition to his Muay Thai and MMA experience, Sean studies jiu jitsu under Gracie Barra’s Roberto Maia and Phil Myers and trains in the Dog Brother’s Stick Fighting system under Greg Brown.

Travis Robertson – Travis has been fighting competitively for over 10 years. He has trained extensively in Muay Thai, MMA and boxing.  His tenure includes Sityodtong Boston for seven years and under both Kru Toy and Kru Yoddecha at Sityodtong Thailand.  As a trainer, he taught at Sityodtong Boston and as the head Muay Thai coach at Unit 2’s training facility in Atlanta, Georgia

About the Combat Sports International Training Facility:  Located at the Beacon Hill Athletic Clubs (BHAC) North Station facility at 261 Friend Street, the center is directly across the street from Boston’s sports and entertainment arena, the TD Bank Garden.
